The Strategy I Learned for Choosing Family Photo Outfits

One of the best strategies for choosing family photo outfits came from getting my colors done. It’s the opposite of what I was doing, but now makes so much sense! Let me walk you through my process for when I chose outfits for our spring family photos last year.

Before Purchasing

Before I even considered what outfits I wanted, I first thought about where these photos were going to go in our home, and what colors might look best within that room. We decided to hang our photo in our living room, which is mostly decorated in neutrals with pops of mauve and green.

Once I knew where the photo would be hung came the strategy I learned in my House of Colour Color Analysis. I got my colors done by Ally who now is with a group at Blend and Bright salon. She is the sweetest, and I couldn’t recommend her enough. It was determined I was a Winter, and then came the process of doing my Colour Ratings. This is one of the neat parts of the whole process, because not only do you find out which colors look best on you, but then they go through each of these best colors and rank them from 100% could be worn from head to toe, to 25% should be worn as accents.

And here’s where Ally’s tip came in: when choosing outfits for family photos, start with yourself!

Which is the exact opposite of what I’d been doing. I typically started with the kids, then Tate, and finally me. But now that I know my best colors, why not start there?

For these particular family photos, I decided the color I wanted to wear was burgundy. Burgundy was a 75% color for me at two stars, and since it matched the color scheme of our home, this seemed like a good fit.

After browsing a few stores, I finally landed on this dress from Amazon that is currently on sale for $44!

After choosing my dress, I then thought about what colors I think Tate looks great in. I have a going hypothesis that Tate is a Summer. I have a couple reasons for this: first, one of this sisters is a summer, and second, I don’t think mustard yellow is one of this best colors, which would be Autumn.

Based on that deduction, I decided a navy sweater would be good for him. Navy is a fairly safe color because everyone has navy, but in different tones, so I thought if I found a cool navy it would work. I also liked navy with the colors in our living room and with my dress. Here is the sweater I settled on and currently on sale:

Finally, I chose the kids’ outfits. I decided to go with the pink scheme for the girls, and blues for Hank.

The girls’ dress is no longer available, but Hank’s shirt was from H&M.

Putting it All Together

After everything arrived and we made sure our shoes weren’t two sizes too small, we got our photos taken by Dahlberg Portraits in Ames.

Here’s how they turned out!

I hope this post helps and gives you some guidance in choosing your next outfit for family pictures! Let me know if you have any other questions!
