A (Really) Big Big Boy Bed

I’ve stated more than once that our renovation to our master bedroom, bathroom, and closet has catapulted into a slippery slope of projects. For the most part, that’s been a good way to nudge us into projects we’ve previously put on the back burner. And Hank’s room was one of them.

Before

The room Hank is in now was previously the master bedroom. Hank’s great grandpa made the built-in headboard, side tables, and shelving. The headboard was made for a king bed, but we had been using a full. When my husband lived in our home growing up, this was also his room. Imagine a wood paneled room with almost every square inch covered in various Michael Jordan, baseball, football, and other sports posters and you’ve pictured his dwelling space. See if you can spot one of the originals in his room now 😉 And yes, most of those posters are saved and I’m sure will be brought back to their walls in the future.

When it was time to move Hank from his crib to a bed, we went straight to the full sized bed. One trick we do that worked well for him and Adeline was to put three pool noodles with a rubber band on each end under the fitted sheet to create a barrier on each side of the bed to prevent them from falling out. I like this trick because it is one less transition from a toddler bed to a larger bed.

Proof of a wild sleeper:

Before Hank moved in, we decided to give his room a little sprucing and paint the walls a light grey and the built-ins a dark grey. I knew paint was a powerful tool in updating a space, but I still can’t believe the difference it made in this room. The entire room is so much brighter!

Hank’s room was perfectly fine with the full bed, but a couple things made us decide to switch to a king bed. One, it drove my husband nuts that the headboard was too big for his bed. Two, our siblings’ families are growing and we thought that having a big bed would be a great place to throw a bunch of kids for sleepovers when we needed extra sleeping space.

After

We visited my sisters and they had each just purchased this Amazon bed. It was so comfortable and we decided to purchase one for Hank’s room. We also bought this bed frame and this box spring cover.

Next, I had seen so many people loving Beddy’s comforters and wanted to try one ourselves. I got him the Farmhouse style with the Minky attached blanket. The bedding is neat because it’s all one piece. The bottom fits around just like a fitted sheet would, and then the comforter zips up around the top sort of like a sleeping bag. One advantage I hadn’t anticipated was that Hank stayed under his covers better during the night. He’s known to be a wild sleeper so he was already using a weighted blanket which we now just put on top of the Beddy’s bedding.

We use this sound machine with all our kids. It’s great for travel, too. And once our kids didn’t need an infant monitor anymore, we began using these Wyze cameras in each of their rooms. They’re great because it’s an app on your phone and you can personalize your detection settings. They also can turn and are only around $35!

The rest of his room is themed around tractors and construction equipment because he loves them. That ABC print is one of my favorite things in his room. I also love the added pops of navy and red, and the curtains are blackout, too!

This stool couldn’t be better for him. When I was growing up we used to get haircuts and perms (I can still smell it) from our close family friend who was a barber. Shout out to Mr. Rick’s! In his shop he had a stool with this saying, and a few years ago for Christmas he gifted us this one. I love it.

After a few nights I asked Hank to tell me his favorite part of his room. His reply was, “Umm, sleeping.” That’s all I can ask for, right?!
