Creating a Mood Board on Canva

I was asked how I create the mood boards during Talk to Me Tuesday, so I thought I’d share how I create them from start to finish!

They are time-consuming, but the more you practice the faster you’ll get. I think they’re a powerful tool in designing a space before purchasing items to see if things really flow together.

Let’s create this mood board

Here you’ll see a lot of the items in our primary bedroom. Begin by saving the photos you want on your template to your phone. Next, download the Canva app. The free version is great, but I subscribe to the paid version so I have access to the background remover tool.

Want to know a secret around this? You can go to remove.bg and it’s a free background removal tool. Just upload your picture, and then save it after the background is removed. This is great if you don’t use this app a ton, but since I use it a lot, that is why I chose the paid subscription.

For this design, I clicked Instagram Story since that was the size I needed to create an Instagram Reel for this. I often choose Photo Collage as well. The search tool will also give you a ton of great options.

I created a blank template this time, but have used other templates plenty of times.

Then I add the Rural Route Raised logo and a title to my mood board. Canva will automatically save your mood board based on your text, which is nice for locating it in the future.

After that it’s just a matter of adding your photos and playing with the design. I love to layer items when I can, use the Position feature to bring items forward or backward, and remove backgrounds for a cleaner look.

As you can see on the photo above, this lamp’s background hasn’t been removed yet, and it covers much of the chair and rug, which doesn’t look as nice or give a good picture of how things will flow together.

And that’s pretty much it! The more you mess with the app, the more familiar you’ll get. Canva has been a great tool for me that I use almost every day. Have you used it before? Or will you in the future?
