Teacher Appreciation Week: Creating a Lactation / Relaxation Room for Teachers

We all love a good before and after, but it’s that much sweeter when it’s for teachers. It’s the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is also Nurse Appreciation Week, all all these humans need all the appreciation they can get.

Before

My husband’s cousin, Abby, is a teacher for Denver Public Schools and is her school’s Wellness Champion. (We already thought you were a champ before the wellness part, Ab.) Abby was awarded a mini grant in March of 2020 where she could use grant money to add a lactation room to her building. After doing some research on necessary items for a lactation room, Abby submitted a proposal to add massage chairs, a shelf, lamps, end tables to set a pump on, and a mini fridge for milk storage. Now, based on said date of when the grant was awarded, you can see where this is going… then Covid hit. Normally a one year project has now turned to two.

In her second proposal the following January, Abby was awarded money for baskets, a sand tray, sand timers, plants, and other items to help teachers relax during their probably three minutes of a break.

Here are pictures of the room before the update:

After

Since its completion, the room has been a hit! The teachers love the massage chairs so much that two of them bought them for their own homes! Well done, Abby.

It’s not too late to thank a teacher and nurse, and maybe this might inspire you to create a lactation/relaxation room in your own district. And if you’re a teacher or nurse reading this, THANK YOU!
