I’ll be the first to admit that history was not my favorite subject in school. As I’ve gotten older, my appreciation for historical events has grown and my interests have increased, but my mind was blown away by the wealth of events shaping our country that happened in Boston. If you’re looking for cities to visit in the US, definitely put Boston on your list!
Lodging
The location of our Airbnb was great. We walked everywhere! The only Ubers we took were to and from the airport. Here is a link, but let me fully disclose that the Airbnb hosts moved our apartments twice and the one we actually stayed in wasn’t nearly this nice. We didn’t spend a ton of time in the Airbnb, anyway, and each couple plus our friend had their own room. I’d still recommend!
Red Rovah, Red Rovah, Send Us Right Ovah
I heard three middle-aged Bostonian ladies say this as they crossed the street and it cracked me up! Anyway, our group did a great job of seeing many parts of Boston. Here are some of the highlights:
Freedom Trail: This is a 2.5 mile path through Boston with 16 stops that played a role in the history of the United States. We chose to be our own tour guide and purchased a pamphlet for cheap. I’m glad we did because this allowed us to stop for food, drinks, or shop along the way. Our Airbnb was across the street from a couple stops, one of which happened to be the cemetery where Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, and John Hancock were buried. Woah. Want to see where the Boston Tea Party began? You can. How about where The Scarlett Letter was published? Yup. The site of the Boston Massacre? You got it. Add in Paul Revere’s home, the “One if by land, two if by sea” church, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat, and so much more. This trail is unbelievable.
Cheers Bar: I grew up watching Cheers with my dad, so it was special to visit this establishment. “Can I draw you a beer, Norm?”
“No, I know what they look like. Just pour me one.”
Fenway Park: Sunny and 72 degrees + great seats + a Mike Trout awesome catch right in front of us (I know he doesn’t play for the Red Sox but it was still really cool, ok?!) made this experience a definite highlight.
Grill 23: If you’re looking for a restaurant to indulge in, this is your spot. Here I ate one of my Top 5 Best Steaks and their Rosé Sangria was *chef’s kiss.
Other Notable Eats: The fish tacos at Bean Town Pub, lobster rolls pretty much anywhere, clam chowder at Bell in Hand Tavern, vegetable beef soup at Boston Harbor Hotel, and the lobster mac n cheese at Grill 23 definitely needs a mention.
Sunset Cruise at Boston Harbor: This was a last-minute Groupon find and I’m so glad we went. If you’re trying to picture the vessel, picture the Booze Cruise episode of The Office. It was really neat to see the city from another perspective.
Boston: Wicked Cool
Truth be told, I wasn’t sure what to expect going to Boston. Turns out it’s a neat city that astounds you with the history that has taken place there, the delicious food, friendly people, and ability to walk to many different parts of the city. Ya gotta go.
