Our Primary Bathroom Must-Haves

When we began planning for our primary bathroom update, we agreed the layout should stay the same. As we were talking through what worked and what didn’t, we found there were a couple things on our must-have list. They all made the cut, but one didn’t work out as planned. Sigh.

Must-Have 1: Only One Sink

Although two sinks are often the route most take for primary bathrooms, we both felt- Tate even more so than me!- that only one sink was required for our bathroom. If I had to choose, I always opt for more counter space to sprawl out while I’m getting ready. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves to go to a hotel and the sink takes up the whole space leaving no room for my skincare/makeup bag!

Must-Have 2: Shower Spray for Easy Cleaning

This was an easy one for me. When choosing the type of shower system we wanted, it had to include a spray feature. I knew when I was cleaning the tile and glass in the shower I’d want an easy way to spray it down and this was the answer.

Must-Have 3: Lighted Mirror

With no natural light coming into this bathroom, good lighting from a light-up mirror was high on my priority list. I also wanted the option of the mirror not always being on, so our electrician made it so just the sconce was on one switch and the mirror was on another. I’m still really happy we did it this way.

Must Have 4: Accent Lighting

I love when the sun has just gone down and we begin turning on our accent lighting around our home. Everything just feels cozy. Adding accent lighting to the bathroom needed to happen, and after visiting a local paint and lumbar store that features kitchen displays that included under-cabinet lighting, I knew that’s what I wanted. I love turning it on before bed, and if I need to use the restroom during the night I’m not blasted by bright light.

Which Didn’t Work Out as Planned?

Did you guess number 3, the lighted mirror?

When I sent our glass people my ideas for the lighted mirror, I was sure to explain that I wanted it bright and that it’s a vanity mirror and needs to make up for the lack of natural light in the room. What I got? Essentially an accent mirror, complete with a color-changing remote for when I need the lights to be bright blue, or pink, or green. After the mirror was installed, I gave it a couple days use to see if it would work, and it’s fine enough, but it’s not bright. Have I called the company asking for it to be fixed? A bunch of times.

I was really excited for this mirror, but it’s been one of the biggest let-downs of our bedroom/bathroom project.

But I’m curious— would you opt for another sink or more counter space? Aside from the mirror, we’ve been really happy with what we’ve made sure to include in our project. Oh, and I didn’t mention the outlets in the closet, but that’s another one we’re thankful we did!

  1. Agree with one sink! How many times are you really using water getting ready??! I’m toying with the idea of lighted mirrors in the upstairs bathroom. Might rethink that!
